Why Give to SoC?

NUS School of Computing (SoC) has a fine track record in grooming leaders for the digital economy, tracing its history of over 30 years, to when it was the only university department in Singapore that produced computing talent for the economy.

To continue its mission in grooming IT leaders and professionals, we need support from our alumni and the business community. This is especially so following the corporatisation of the University, which essentially puts all faculties on the path toward self-sufficiency.

We invite your support toward the following two causes:
 
  Computing Student Development Fund
 

This Fund has been set up to allow more Computing students to gain international exposure and professional qualification. Money will be drawn from the Fund to subsidise students’ overseas study trips and certification courses such as those by SAP, IBM, Oracle and Sun.
 

The Fund may also be drawn to send graduate students to participate in top academic conferences. Currently, student participation in these activities is contingent on the availability of limited funds for student travel and conference participation.
 

To safeguard the usage of the Fund, money from it can only be drawn with the approval of the School’s Executive Committee.

  Computing Alumni Assistance Scheme
 

This is a new financial scheme mooted by the Computer and Information Science Alumni Association or CISAA, the alumni body affiliated to the School. The financial scheme is aimed at providing needy students in the School with financial assistance.
 

Money from the scheme may be used toward defraying tuition fees, supplemenary expenses on project work, hostel accommodation, software and hardware, self-contained educational programmes, etc. Each award under the scheme will subsidise 75% of such expenses for a student, up to a maximum value of S$3,000 per award.

  2.5 Times Tax Exemption and Dollar-for-Dollar Grant Matching

Donations made by Singapore tax residents to the Fund or the assistance scheme will be eligible for 2.5 times tax exemption (details here).

In addition, the government will match dollar for dollar each donation made by the private sector (details here). So each dollar that you donate will generate twice its worth toward the cause of nurturing Computing talent in Singapore.
   
  How to Donate?

To make a direct donation to the Computing Student Development Fund, you could do so online with your credit cards here. Please remember to select “Computing Student Development Fund” as the item you wish to support. Alternatively, you could send us a crossed cheque. Direct donations to the assistance scheme may also be be made with a crossed cheque.

Donations by crossed cheques should be issued to “National University of Singapore”. Please remember to specify “Computing Student Development Fund” or “Computing Alumni Assistance Award” on the back of the cheque, and mail it to:

Individuals or corporations looking into other forms of giving to the School may consider endowing scholarships, buildings and facilities that could be named according to their wishes. Details may be found here.
